WHAT IS A HATE CRIME?

A ‘hate crime’ is an act of prejudice  involving violence or hostility towards another motivated by any of the following:

The Crown Prosecution Service defines a hate crime: The term ‘hate crime’ can be used to describe a range of criminal behaviour where the perpetrator is motivated by hostility or demonstrates hostility towards the victim’s disability, race, religion, sexual orientation or transgender identity.

What that essentially means is that any crime that attacks any part of a person’s belief, choice or way they live their life is a hate crime.

There are nine protected characteristics that are defined by the law, and then as an organisation, we adopt the tenth characteristic; “alternative subculture”
